The country's National Media Council (NMC) has announced that all visa requirements have been scrapped for 80 countries - including the United States, UK, China and Russia - as well as for football fans visiting Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

It comes after a controversial period for Qatar with its neighbors accusing it of supporting terrorism, which Doha denies.

The country's Ministry of Interior made the announcement on Tuesday morning and said that US citizens would no longer need to apply for a visa before traveling to Qatar.

The government did not reveal how long this waiver will last but it comes amid growing concern over security in Doha following Saudi Arabia's decision to cut ties with Qatar earlier this year.
