Major Changes Affecting American Travelers in 2023

As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans are eager to resume travel and cross items off their bucket lists. However, a number of new developments in the global travel scene will have an impact on American travelers in 2023. Here is a list of some of the most significant changes to be aware of.

Online passport renewal

The expected launch of an online passport renewal portal by the US Passport Agency is a significant development for American travelers. The portal is expected to be available to the general public in 2023, following a successful pilot program in 2022. Travelers will be able to renew their passports online by uploading a photo from their own device and paying fees electronically. While the new system will be more convenient for applicants, processing times and fees will remain the same as in the past.

Visitor fee to enter the European Union and the Schengen area

Another change that will impact American travelers is the implementation of a visitor fee for those wishing to enter the European Union and the Schengen area. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be implemented beginning in November, requiring non-EU citizens, including Americans between the ages of 18 and 70, to fill out a form and pay a €7 entry fee upon arrival in any EU member country. ETIAS clearance will be required for entry into any of the 26 Schengen Area countries that have eliminated border controls. Prior to their trip, travelers must apply for ETIAS clearance and obtain an entry authorization.

Aside from these changes, American travelers can expect to see more biometrics, such as fingerprints and facial scans, used at airports in Europe and elsewhere. Although this technology is being used to improve security and streamline the travel process, it may also raise privacy concerns. It is critical that travelers are aware of these developments and consider the potential implications for their travel plans.

Finally, American travelers should keep an eye on trends in nature, active, and wellness tourism destination selection. Colombia, with its diverse landscapes and rich culture, is a classic destination that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. South America also has a number of charming tourism villages worth visiting if you want a more authentic and immersive travel experience.

As we begin a new year, it is critical for American travelers to stay up to date on the latest developments in the global travel scene. With new regulations, systems, and services set to go into effect, it's critical to understand how these changes may affect your travel plans. You can ensure that your travels are smooth and enjoyable by staying up to date and making informed decisions.
